Home / Treatments / Dissolving filler

Dissolving filler, staged rather than stripped.

Somebody asks me to dissolve everything in one appointment most weeks, and I generally there is a better order to do it in. Here is the reasoning.

Dissolving

  • HylenexPriced by how much is needed. Consented the same way a filler appointment is.

Why not dissolve all of it today?

Hyaluronidase is not selective. It works on the filler that is in there and on some of the hyaluronic acid your tissue made on its own. That comes back over time, but not that afternoon, and in between the area can sit flatter than anyone planned for.

So how do you do it?

Small amounts, one area at a time, generally at least two weeks between passes so we can see what the tissue actually looks like without swelling sitting on top of it.

What should I bring?

The product name and the date, if you can get them. Different hyaluronic acid products behave differently under hyaluronidase, and going in without that means guessing at the dose.

Is any of this urgent?

Almost never, with one exception. Anything that looks like a vascular concern is handled immediately and is a completely different conversation. If something feels wrong, painful, or is changing colour, call rather than book.

When I would say wait, or no

Every line below is a reason I would ask you to come back later or send you somewhere else. Worth reading before you book.

  • Anyone at day three or day five after an appointment. A fair amount of what you are looking at is swelling, and swelling resolves on its own schedule.
  • Anyone wanting everything gone in one visit, unless there is a clinical reason to.
  • Anyone whose filler is not hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronidase does nothing to Sculptra or Radiesse.

Questions people actually ask

Does it hurt more than filler?

It is comparable, and it is quicker.

Will I go back to exactly how I was?

Generally close, once your own hyaluronic acid recovers over the following weeks. The first days after are not the endpoint.

Can I have new filler the same day?

No. I want to see the area settled first, which is at least two weeks.
