Four wrinkle relaxers, and how one gets chosen.
Most practices carry one, sometimes two, and the answer you get there is whichever one is on the shelf. Here there are four, so the question can actually be about your face.
What is on the shelf
Dysport from Galderma, Daxxify from Revance, Jeuveau from Evolus and Xeomin from Merz. Four manufacturers, four different molecules. Plenty of people say Botox for all of them; the Allergan product itself is not one I stock. On the filler side I carry Galderma's Restylane range, Merz's Radiesse and Evolus's Evolysse.
Some of what is on the shelfIs one of them better?
No, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something. They are different molecules with different behaviour, and the right one depends on the area and on you.
- Xeomin is the most stripped-down: no complexing proteins around the molecule.
- Dysport spreads a little more, which I generally like across a forehead.
- Daxxify is peptide-stabilised and generally lasts longer. That is what the extra money buys, and for some people it is worth it and for others it is not.
- Jeuveau was developed for cosmetic use specifically, and is the closest of the four to what most people have had before.
Why carry four?
Because the alternative is fitting the face to the stock. A practice with one brand has one answer, and that answer is the same whether it suits your forehead or not. Carrying the range costs more and moves slower, and it is the only way the choice can genuinely be about the area being treated.
It also means nobody has to be talked out of what they came in asking for. If you have had one before and liked it, you can have it.
Is a unit a unit?
No, and this is where per-unit pricing gets used badly. Units are not comparable across brands: they are defined by each manufacturer's own assay, so twenty units of one product is not twenty units of another. Shopping on price-per-unit across brands produces a number that cannot be compared to anything. That is exactly why I price by area.
What if I have always had one in particular?
Then tell me, and tell me how you liked it, how long it lasted and what you did not like. That is genuinely useful information, and it usually points at which of the four I would start you on.
When I would say wait, or no
Every line below is a reason I would ask you to come back later or send you somewhere else. Worth reading before you book.
- Anyone inside about four weeks of a wedding, a photograph or a trip.
- Anyone who has had a reaction to a neurotoxin before, until we have talked properly about which one and what happened.
- Anyone who wants a brand I do not stock. I would rather you go where it is carried than have me talk you into a substitute.
