Recent sun is a contraindication, not a preference

August is when this question arrives most often, and it is usually asked as a formality. Somebody books laser hair removal for a Tuesday, spends the weekend on a boat, and expects the appointment to go ahead because it is on the calendar.

In a fair number of cases it does not. Recent sun is not a preference or a courtesy request. It is a contraindication, and it decides on the day whether the appointment happens.

Why does a tan change a laser appointment?

Because the settings are chosen from the skin in front of me on the day, not from the skin that was in front of me at the consultation. Laser and IPL settings are read off the surface tone of the area being treated. When that tone has moved in the two weeks since the plan was made, the plan is no longer the right plan, and running it anyway is how burns and lasting pigment changes happen.

It applies to the treated area specifically rather than to the whole person. A tanned back does not cancel a face appointment, and a pale face does not rescue a tanned leg.

How long after sun exposure before a laser appointment?

Generally about four weeks with no meaningful exposure on the area to be treated, and for some people longer. Meaningful is doing a lot of work in that sentence, and it is deliberate. Walking from the car is not the issue. Two afternoons at the beach in the week before is, and so is a golf round without a hat.

Erbium YAG sits at the strict end of that, IPL close behind it, and laser hair removal carries the same requirement for a plainer reason: the settings depend on the contrast between hair and surrounding skin, and a tan flattens exactly that contrast.

Does a spray tan count?

Yes, and this surprises people more than the rest of it does. Self-tanner and spray tan change the surface color that the settings are read from, which means they change the setting even though nothing underneath has changed. Generally two weeks and thorough exfoliation, and the area has to be genuinely clear rather than mostly clear. Residue along the hairline and in the creases is still residue.

Tinted sunless products applied the morning of an appointment are the version I see most, usually because nobody thought of them as tanning.

What has to happen afterward?

Sun avoidance on the treated area, measured in weeks rather than days, plus daily SPF on it and no beach days inside that window. For Erbium the discipline runs longer than that, realistically to the end of the season.

Which is the part worth thinking about before booking. An appointment in August is also a commitment to an August and a September that look different from the usual ones. Somebody who knows they will not keep to that is better served booking in October, and I would rather say so beforehand than after.

What gets postponed here

• A current tan on the treatment area, whether it came from the sun or from a bottle.
• Any meaningful exposure in roughly the previous four weeks.
• Travel inside the recovery window. If a cruise leaves in ten days, the appointment moves to after it rather than before it.
• Recent isotretinoin. Deferred, with the interval decided per person.
• Photosensitizing medication, including some common antibiotics. Often just a timing question, but it has to be asked.
• Active infection, a cold sore or an open lesion in the field.
• Melasma being brought to IPL in August. Generally the wrong month, and in some cases the wrong treatment altogether, which is a longer conversation than a rescheduling one.

What a postponement costs

The price does not move with the month. Laser hair removal is priced per area and quoted at the consultation, and a full-body plan is a different order of commitment. IPL is quoted per session at the consultation. Erbium YAG is quoted for the face, or for face and neck together. Spider vein and tattoo work are quoted per area. Your quote is the same in October as in August; the calendar changes when, never how much.

What a postponement costs me is the booking. That is the whole of the incentive problem in this room, and it is the reason the disqualifiers above are written down in advance rather than decided in the moment with an empty afternoon to fill.

So what does a workable August look like?

Mostly it looks like a September and October plan made in August. The assessment is the part that can be done with a tan, so the consultation is worth doing now even when the treatment lands later, and the sun-avoidance window is worth starting before the booking rather than after it.

The order matters more than most people expect. Trips first, avoidance window second, appointment date third. Booked in that order the appointment generally happens on the day it was booked for. Booked in the other order it gets moved, and by the time it is moved the calendar has filled with everybody who arrives in October.
